CAPRICORN HIGH SCHOOL DELIVER IN STYLE AT LIMPOPO LEG OF TRACK+FIELD SERIES

Polokwane, Limpopo: Dominating the boys and girls divisions, Capricorn High School coasted into the Track+Field National Final after finishing top of the overall standings at the Limpopo leg of the nationwide high schools athletics series in Polokwane on Wednesday.

Competing at the University of Limpopo, Capricorn won the girls competition ahead of the Hlabi Secondary School team, who took second place, and Sinthumule Secondary School in third.

While Capricorn also won the boys competition, raking in the most points, multiple other schools also showed tremendous promise, with Lekwa Secondary School and Pepps College ending second and third, respectively.

“This Track+Field series is a good initiative because it has lifted the standard of our athletes,” said Pat Semono, sports organiser at Capricorn High School.

“Our athletes are so happy to have won here, and it means the world to them to represent the province at the national final. They worked very hard to win this.”

Aside from Capricorn emerging triumphant, the highlight of the day was the wide range of schools that participated, as hundreds of learners from around the province converged on the University of Limpopo stadium to take advantage of the opportunity to compete in the inaugural Track+Field series.

“What an incredible day of Track+Field in Polokwane. We had nearly 1000 kids of all ages competing and just enjoying athletics, and it was incredible to see so many kids running, jumping, and throwing,” said series co-founder and former Olympic sprinter Mathew Quinn.

“In the end Capricorn stepped up and delivered, dominating today. It’s an incredible school with a great athletics programme.

“So, it’s amazing to see top schools competing here, but also to have so many kids out on the track, participating in athletics. That’s what this series is about – finding the best school track and field school in South Africa and really just making sure every kid has an opportunity to compete.”

The last provincial leg of the Track+Field series – a joint venture between SuperSport, SA Schools Athletics and Athletics South Africa – will be held at Dal Josaphat in Paarl (Western Cape) on 22 April, where the remaining qualifiers will be confirmed for the National Final in Johannesburg.
